How to Connect Customer Feedback to Claude or ChatGPT (MCP, Files, and RAG)

Last updated: · By Matt Teixeira, Founder and CEO

Short answer

Yes. You can connect customer feedback to Claude or ChatGPT so its answers are grounded in real user input, in five ways: paste or upload an export, keep files in a Claude Project or ChatGPT project, connect the apps where feedback lives, build your own RAG pipeline, or connect your feedback tool's MCP server. An upload is fine for one question. For questions you ask every week, connect the MCP server of a tool that has already grouped and counted your feedback, so the AI cites real quotes and account counts instead of guessing from whatever it retrieved.

Key Takeaways

  • Uploads and projects are snapshots, only as fresh as your last export.
  • MCP is the open standard that lets Claude and ChatGPT call tools in other software. Claude supports custom MCP servers on every plan; ChatGPT on paid plans.
  • Retrieval finds passages; it does not count. For "how many accounts" questions, connect feedback that is already themed and counted.
  • Productboard, Dovetail, Enterpret, Canny, and Deck all run MCP servers. Plan rules vary widely.
  • Before you trust any setup, ask it four questions you already know the answers to.

What Are the Five Ways to Connect Feedback to Claude or ChatGPT?

Each option trades setup effort against freshness and against what the AI can do reliably. Times are rules of thumb for one PM with an export or a feedback tool in hand.

What Is MCP, in Plain Words?

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets AI apps such as Claude and ChatGPT call tools in other software. Its docs call it "a USB-C port for AI applications" (MCP docs). Anthropic introduced it in November 2024 and in December 2025 donated it to the Agentic AI Foundation, a Linux Foundation fund it co-founded with OpenAI and Block (Anthropic).

In practice, a vendor runs an MCP server at a web address. You paste the address into Claude or ChatGPT and sign in, usually with OAuth, so the AI sees only what your account can see. When you ask a question, the AI picks from the server's tools, such as "search insights" or "list themes," and answers from what they return.

Read tools fetch data. Write tools change it, such as merging two themes, which is why permissions matter (Step 5).

Which Feedback Tools Have an MCP Server?

Productboard and Dovetail both have MCP servers that work with Claude and ChatGPT, and so do Enterpret, Canny, and Deck. Jira Product Discovery has no server of its own, though Atlassian's Rovo MCP server may reach its ideas. What differs is what the AI gets back and which plan you need.

ToolServerWhat the AI can reachPlan or access
Deckhttps://mcp.getdeck.io/mcpThemes, insights with quotes and source links, transcripts, NPS, segments, Competitors, Opportunity Backlog, Initiatives, Projects (Deck docs)Every plan, Free included
Productboardhttps://mcp.productboard.comCreate and update features, initiatives, releases, objectives, companies, and feedback (Productboard)Business and Enterprise (pricing); an admin turns it on
Dovetailhttps://dovetail.com/api/mcpSearch and read data, highlights, docs, and channels; create projects, docs, and highlights (Dovetail)First-party Claude and ChatGPT connectors; plan rules not stated (docs)
EnterpretEnterpret MCP serverThemes, sentiment, verbatims with citations, account metadata (Enterpret)Annual contract; AWS Marketplace lists $120,000 for 12 months (AWS)
CannyCanny MCP server60+ tools to list ideas and insights and to create, update, or merge ideas (Canny)Pro or Business with Canny Ideas; an Owner connects first
Jira Product DiscoveryAtlassian Rovo MCP serverJira work items; Atlassian's docs don't mention JPD ideas or insights, so test it on your projectCalls use shared Rovo credits (Atlassian)

Vendors change these plan rules often, so check the pricing page as well as the docs. The apps where raw feedback lives have servers too; the Notion, Confluence, and Attio guides show what each one reaches.

Should You Connect Raw Tickets or Analyzed Feedback?

Connect the layer where the counting has already happened. That choice affects answer quality more than picking Claude over ChatGPT.

Source apps now run their own MCP servers. Intercom's lets an AI search and fetch conversations and contacts (Intercom): ideal for "find the thread where Acme complained about exports," weak for "what are our top complaints this quarter?"

The reason is that a search tool returns one page of results, and the AI summarizes that page as if it were everything. A feedback tool's server has already themed and counted every item, so the AI reads totals instead of inventing them.

Ask Every Vendor One Question
Do your MCP tools return counts with source links? If they return only raw text, you have a search box, not an analyst.

Step 1: List Your Questions and Pick the Lightest Option

Write down five to ten questions your team actually asks, and sort them into three kinds:

  • Lookup: "Find the call where a customer described the SSO bug." Every option handles these.
  • Summary: "What do customers dislike about onboarding?" Needs the whole period, not a sample.
  • Count or trend: "How many enterprise accounts raised permissions issues in 90 days, and is that rising?" Needs option 5, or option 1 with code over tagged rows.

Pick the lightest option that answers them as often as you ask. A question you repeat monthly will outlive any export. If your feedback still sits in five tools, start with how to centralize customer feedback.

The AI can only cite what it can identify. For exports and projects, use one row per feedback item: ID, date, source, account, plan or ARR band, the customer's words, and a link to the original.

Strip signatures and quoted replies, and replace emails and phone numbers with tokens such as [EMAIL]. Put the date range in file names, such as zendesk-2026-08-to-10.csv, so stale data is obvious. For export steps by tool, redaction tips, and each provider's training rules, see how to analyze support tickets and sales calls with AI.

Step 3: Connect Your Feedback

Paste or Upload an Export

Claude takes up to 20 files per chat, including CSV; XLSX needs code execution turned on (Claude Help). ChatGPT also reads CSVs and can analyze them with code.

The prompt matters more than the upload. Ask the model to tag each row with a theme, count rows and unique accounts per theme with code, show you the code, and quote rows word for word with their IDs.

Set Up a Claude Project or ChatGPT Project

Projects keep files and instructions across chats. Claude Projects are on every plan, five on Free, with files up to 30 MB each (Claude Help). On paid plans, Claude switches to RAG mode as project knowledge nears the context limit; past that point, treat any total as an estimate.

Put your recurring questions and theme definitions in the instructions. Replace last month's export instead of adding beside it, or rows get counted twice.

Add an MCP Server in Claude

Custom connectors work on every Claude plan, but Free allows only one. On Team and Enterprise, Owners and Primary Owners add them, plus any Enterprise custom role with Manage access to Libraries (Claude Help).

  1. Open Customize → Connectors, or Organization settings → Connectors on Team and Enterprise.
  2. Choose Add custom connector and paste the server URL, such as https://mcp.getdeck.io/mcp.
  3. Sign in to the vendor in the browser window that opens.

Claude Code adds servers from the command line; see how to give coding agents your customer evidence.

Add an MCP Server in ChatGPT

OpenAI's docs describe connecting a server "to ChatGPT as a plugin," with read and write tools and OAuth sign-in. Writes need your confirmation by default, and any tool not marked read-only counts as a write (OpenAI). OpenAI's help center lists full MCP support, writes included, for Business, Enterprise, and Edu on the web; Pro can connect a server with read and fetch access only (OpenAI Help).

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web. Workspace permissions apply, so on Business and Enterprise check that your admin allows custom servers.
  2. On the Plugins page, select the plus button, then Add custom MCP server; enter a name and URL, and pick OAuth.
  3. Review the risk warning, create the plugin, sign in, and check the tools ChatGPT found.

OpenAI has renamed this feature more than once, so older guides call it connectors or apps.

Build Your Own RAG Pipeline

  • Store rows, not documents. Keep each feedback item as a database row with metadata and an embedding column. Postgres with pgvector is a common start.
  • Split the jobs. Answer counts with SQL and quotes with vector search. Never ask a vector index for a total.
  • Theme before you search. Have an LLM extract and label feedback first, so you are not searching raw tickets.
  • Wrap it in MCP. One server built with the official SDKs works in Claude, ChatGPT, and coding agents.

Rule of thumb: one engineer can build a prototype in a few days. The lasting cost is upkeep: syncs, theme drift, and access control.

Step 4: Test It with Questions You Already Know the Answer To

Ten minutes of checks prevents the worst outcome: a confident, wrong number in a roadmap review.

  1. Count check. Ask for a number you counted by hand, such as accounts that reported one bug last month. If it is off by more than about 10%, do not use the setup for counts.
  2. Quote check. Ask for three quotes with links on a known topic. Open each one and confirm the words match.
  3. Freshness check. Ask about something a customer said yesterday. The answer shows your lag.
  4. Absence check. Ask about a feature no customer has requested. A good setup says it found nothing; a weak one invents demand.

Rerun the checks whenever you change the source, the prompt, or the model.

Step 5: Set Permissions Before You Share It

  • Start read-only. Turn on write tools after a week of reading, and approve each write.
  • Decide who can connect. Claude's owner roles, Productboard's MCP roles, Canny's Owner-first setup, and Deck's Settings → MCP all control this.
  • Use business accounts. Personal plans can have different training rules. Ask whether the server masks names, emails, and phone numbers in its responses.
  • Remember the handoff. Once an answer reaches Claude or ChatGPT, that client's data policy applies, not the vendor's. For the rest of a vendor review, use the customer feedback platform security checklist.

Worked Example: One Question, Two Setups

This example is illustrative. On a Monday, a PM at a 30-person B2B SaaS company asks: "What are customers saying about our Salesforce sync, and is it getting worse?"

  • Export route. She uploads 90 days of Zendesk tickets, about 2,000, to ChatGPT and has it search with code. It finds 140 tickets that say "Salesforce" but misses "CRM sync" and "contacts stopped updating," and with no earlier period in the file, "getting worse" goes unanswered. Two hours, stale by next Monday.
  • MCP route. Her feedback tool already syncs Zendesk, Gong, and Slack. Claude finds a "CRM Sync" theme, including tickets that never say "Salesforce," with insights from 41 accounts in the last 90 days, up from 22 the 90 days before, mostly negative, with five linked quotes. Five minutes, and next Monday brings new numbers.
  • Either way, she opens three linked quotes before the numbers go into a planning doc.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating a project as live. It knows only what you last uploaded, so date every file.
  • Connecting every MCP server you can find. Each adds tools the AI must choose between. Connect what the question needs.
  • Clicking "always allow" on write tools on day one. Approve writes one at a time until the setup earns trust.
  • Leaving out the time window and segment. "What do customers want?" returns the loudest theme of all time, not this quarter's problem for your best accounts.

Tools That Help

  • The feedback tool you already pay for. If it is in the table above and your plan includes MCP, connect it first. It is the cheapest test of the approach.
  • Claude or ChatGPT projects with exports. No extra cost on a business plan you already have; you own the refreshing, counting, and checks.
  • Postgres with pgvector and the official MCP SDKs. For teams with engineering time and data no vendor reaches.

Where Deck Fits

Deck is built for option 5: it themes and counts feedback from your sources, then serves the results over MCP.

  • Setup: one URL with OAuth sign-in and no API keys. It works on every plan, Free included, and is on by default for new organizations (Deck MCP server).
  • What the AI gets: 82 tools, 24 of them read-only; each write tool does one thing, such as creating a Project. In Claude and ChatGPT, overview questions open the Deck view, where "Customers affected" counts each customer once (Deck MCP docs).
  • Controls: admins can turn MCP off or limit it to admins. With PII redaction on, MCP responses mask customer names and emails, plus emails and phone numbers inside quotes (Deck privacy docs). Your workspace is hosted in the region chosen at setup (North America, Europe, or Australia), and Deck does not train models on it.
  • Beyond chat: the Deck plugin adds the server and product skills to Claude Code, Codex, and Grok Build (announcement), and Deck's AI skills bring the same workflows to Claude chat. To write your own, see Claude skills and AI prompts for product managers.
  • Limitations: MCP is OAuth only, with no API keys or service accounts, so unattended jobs need the Deck API, which starts on Starter. Answers cover only connected sources; Free includes 1 integration and 200 AI credits a month, and Zendesk, NPS tools, and subtheme tools need Starter. Syncs run on a schedule, not in real time. Redaction misses names inside free text, and the Deck view is not yet verified in ChatGPT's desktop and mobile apps.

You can connect Claude or ChatGPT on the Free plan and run the four checks from Step 4 on your own data. Starter is $99 a month ($79 billed annually) with 2,500 AI credits and 5 integrations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, both do. Productboard's lets Claude, ChatGPT, and coding agents read and update features, initiatives, and feedback, and its pricing page lists it on the Business and Enterprise plans. Dovetail's lets assistants search research data, highlights, and docs and create content, and Claude and ChatGPT connect to it as first-party connectors.

Claude allows custom connectors on every plan, though Free users can add only one and on Team plans only owners can add them. ChatGPT gives Business, Enterprise, and Edu full read and write MCP support on the web, while Pro connects with read and fetch access only. Both providers change these rules often, so check their help centers before you roll it out.

Only when it runs code over a spreadsheet with one row per feedback item and a theme column. If it reads the file through retrieval, it sees the most relevant passages rather than every row, so any total is an estimate. Ask it to count with code, show you the code, and spot-check a few rows.

Not one of its own. Because Jira Product Discovery ideas are Jira work items, Atlassian's Rovo MCP server may be able to read them, and its calls use Rovo credits from your organization's shared pool. Atlassian's documentation does not list Jira Product Discovery or its insights, so test the fields you need before relying on it.
