What Is a Competitor Gap Analysis?

A competitor gap analysis finds where rival products are weak or strong and checks each finding against what your own customers ask for. The gaps worth acting on are the ones where competitor reviews and your own feedback describe the same problem. Those become openings for your roadmap, backed by evidence from both sides.

Why Competitor Analysis Usually Fails

Competitive analysis usually ends as a feature grid. It tells you what rivals have, not what their customers hate, and not whether your own customers want the same thing. So the roadmap chases a rival's launch, or ignores a real opening because nobody can point at the evidence.

How Deck Finds Gaps Your Customers Confirm

Deck researches the products you compete with from public reviews and groups what their customers praise and complain about. Then it checks each finding against your own feedback. A gap counts only when the competitor evidence and your customers' evidence point at the same problem, and you can promote it straight into your Opportunity Backlog.

How to Run a Competitor Gap Analysis in Deck

Run it yourself in Deck, or hand it to your AI agent. Same steps, same result.

  1. 01

Add the Competitors You Sell Against

Open Visualize β†’ Competitors and add each rival by its product domain. Use the products you lose deals to, not every name in the category.

  2. 02

    Let Research Finish

Start research and wait for the report. Research runs in the background and can take a few minutes. Deck emails you when it is ready.

  3. 03

    Read Both Columns

Weaknesses to Exploit are what competitor customers complain about. Each one is a possible opening. Strengths to Match are what they praise. Each one can be a gap in your own product. Open the review quote on a row before you trust it.

  4. 04

Check It Against Your Own Feedback

For each candidate, search your own themes and insights for the same problem. A shared keyword is not enough. Read the quotes. Sort each gap into one of three groups: customers also ask, competitor only, or already on the backlog.

  5. 05

Promote the Gaps Worth Acting On

On a row you want to act on, choose Promote to Opportunity. Name it after the customer problem, not the rival. Leave on β€œFind information on my own customer feedback” so Deck attaches your own evidence too.

- Customers also ask: Both sides have evidence for the same problem
- Competitor only: Their customers mention it, yours do not yet
- Already on the backlog: An opportunity exists, link it
## For each top gap, paste two quotes
- Competitor review: "[quote]"
- Your customer: "[quote]"

Public reviews of the products you add, from sites such as G2, Capterra, Reddit, and the app stores. Each finding keeps the review quote so you can check it.

A competitor's weakness only matters to you if your customers hit the same problem, or if prospects choose the rival because of it. Matching keeps the list about your market, not theirs.
